Signs of dehumanization in the nurse-midwife job in Poland

Journal Title: Pielęgniarstwo XXI wieku - Year 2013, Vol 12, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim of the study. To draw attention to the emerging threat of dehumanization of patient care as a result of dehumanization of everyday life and the fact that the essential features of modern nursing, as morality and care, the concept of justice and good will, be subordinated to the economics and criterion of profit. Nursing as a humanistic science. The main principle of humanism was the statement of the Roman writer, Terence: “I am a man, and whatever concerns humanity is of interest to me.” This principle was supporting and promoting the humanistic attitudes and acknowledging a human being and his dignity as the greatest good. Dehumanization is a phenomenon of the loss and disappearance of the human elements. The consequence of this is the loss of the cultured human being’s features.
