Abstract
Aiming to evaluate the climatic diversity among the states located in the Northeast Region of Brazil and their adequacy for beef cattle production, the altitude, rainfall, average annual temperature, relative humidity, and temperature humidity index data for 94 cities distributed among the states was evaluated. A multivariate data analysis was performed to verify the importance of the variables and better assess the divergence between the states. Utilizing the standardized data, a canonical analysis and a cluster analysis using the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) algorithm were performed with the SAS and GENES programs. The results showed that the first two canonical variables explained over 88% of the variation among the states, with the cities of Maranhão and Bahia showing the greatest divergence from the other states. The clustering analysis also indicated dissimilarities between a small group of six cities and the other groups in the region. Thus, the variables chosen effectively discriminated between the states located in the Northeast Region of Brazil.
