Social representations of school violence according to the expressions of young students

Journal Title: Revista Eletronica de Enfermagem - Year 2012, Vol 14, Issue 3

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the social representations of school violence according to young students attending public schools in a city located in Northwest Rio Grande do Sul. This qualitative, descriptive and comprehensive study of social representations was performed in two public schools in August of 2010, with thirteen youths between 16 and 18 years of age, including nine girls and four boys. Data was collected using the projective technique and was then analyzed under the theoretical framework of social representations. The study findings revealed four figurative and symbolic meaning units: antisocial behaviors; exclusion among peers; teachers’ authoritarianism; and social and family context. The study reveals the need for intersectoral work, the connection of service networks, and the creation of public policies to guide the complementary and coping actions regarding this issue.
