SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER CANDIDATES’ SELF EVALUATION OF THEIR GEOGRAPHY COMPETIENCIES AND GEOGRAPHY COURSES

Abstract

This study was carried out by using qualitative research methods in order to evaluate the geography courses and themselves of social studies teacher candidates in terms of geographic competency. The research was carried out with 95 social studies teacher candidates who study 3rd grade at a large state university’s Faculty of Education within the spring semester of 2013-2014 academic year. The data collected from the interviewees by using semi-structured interview. The data was analyzed by means of content analysis. According to the results of the study, the participants mostly reported that the geography courses, which they have taken during the higher education period, were poorly. They emphasized that the geographic competency of them selves was inadequate. The participants also stated that the best way of teaching and learning geography courses were field work, cooperative learning, mastery learning, exploratory learning, and using enriched teaching aids and technologies.
