Social support and parent-child relationship among adolescents and their influence on emotions

Abstract
ObjectiveTo explore the association between social supportï¼ parent-child relationshipsï¼ and depressionï¼ anxietyï¼ and loneliness among adolescentsï¼ in order to provide a reference for improving mental health in youth.MethodsA total of 11ï¼596 middle school students from two districts of Shanghai were investigated with the stratified random cluster sampling method. The Chinese version of Patient Health Questionnaire ï¼PHQ-2-Cï¼ï¼ Generalized Anxiety Disorder ï¼GAD-7ï¼ï¼ UCLA Loneliness Scale ï¼ULS-6ï¼ï¼ Perceived Social Support Scale and Parent-child Cohesion Questionnaire were used in the survey. Statistical inferences were made using t-testï¼ ANOVAï¼ and logistic regression analysis.ResultsGirlsï¼ non-graduatesï¼ students ranking in the top 25%ï¼ adolescents living with parents and with higher socioeconomic status had higher scores of social support and parent-child cohesion than boysï¼ graduatesï¼ students ranking in the middle or in the bottom 25%ï¼ adolescents not living with parents and with lower socioeconomic status ï¼P<0.05ï¼. Adolescents' parent-child cohesion and social support were negatively correlated with all kinds of emotions. Parent-child cohesion was an associated factor of depression ï¼OR=0.93ï¼ 95%CIï¼0.91â0.94ï¼ï¼ loneliness ï¼OR=0.94ï¼ 95%CIï¼0.94â0.95ï¼ and anxiety ï¼ORmild=0.98ï¼ 95%CIï¼ 0.98â0.99ï¼ ORmoderate or severe=0.96ï¼ 95%CIï¼ 0.95â0.98ï¼ï¼ but there were differences in the correlation between emotions and social support in different dimensions.ConclusionSocial support and parent-child relationship are significantly associated with depressionï¼ anxiety and loneliness in adolescent students. Paying more attention to youth with different characteristicsï¼ taking targeted measures to improve the level of social support and establishing a good family relationship are conducive to promoting the mental health of adolescents.
