Socially maladjusted men and their sexual scripts in the context of psychoactive substance use

Journal Title: Alkoholizm i Narkomania - Year 2018, Vol 31, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction The research topic was psychoactive substance use as a factor that diversifies the respondents’ sexual scripts and as an element of their sexual activity. Material and methods The data were obtained from research projects carried out among 18-year-aged Voluntary Labour Corps members (N = 563) and prisoners (N = 485). The method used was a diagnostic survey. Results Adolescent drug use, frequent alcohol consumption, alcohol abuse or early symptoms of alcohol dependence co-occur with more frequent sexual contacts and particularly with risky behaviours such as early sexual initiation (under the age of 15), giving up contraception, prostitution and a large number of sex partners. The majority of men have had multiple sexual experiences while being intoxicated with alcohol or drugs. Discussion The research shows results similar to other studies – psychoactive substance use by adolescents is a factor that affects their sexual scripts. The prevalence of socially maladjusted men’s sexual activities under the influence of alcohol can be justified with their risky lifestyles resulting from the need for intense sensations and lower cognitive reserve leading to difficulties with appropriate assessment of risky sexual activities. Conclusions It was stated that not only dependence but also occasional psychoactive substances use significantly affect adolescents’ model of sexual activity (increasing the number of risky sexual behaviours in particular). The study also revealed that the state of alcohol and drug intoxication is a frequent factor that accompanied the sexual activity of the majority of socially maladjusted men.
