Socio-demographic and health status of residents of an old age home in Latur city, Maharashtra

Abstract
Background: Rapid urbanization industrialization and modernization in India is leading to breaking of joint families. More and more families are adopting small family norm and becoming nuclear families. The population of elderly in India (over 60 years) ranks second in the world2. The main reason for this is latest instruments, advanced medicine, world class treatment, social protection, living standard and food is available now a days. Methods and Materials: The current study was conducted at a old age home in Latur city. The data was collected through interview with the residents of old age home. In total 33 residents were interviewed. Results: Out of 33 residents 42% were males and 57% were females. 3 residents were <60 years old , 20 were between 61-80 years old and remaining 10 were above 81 years old. 72% residents said their children were not able to look after them, 21% residents were not having children or son to look after them and remaining 6% residents wanted freedom to live the life on their terms.8 residents were having past history of Hypertension, 4 having Asthma, 3 having Arthritis, 2 having TB and 1 having past history of DM. 17(51%) residents had no past history of any major illness. Conclusion: Majority of residents were either unmarried or widowed and female. Probably old age is the age when a human being feels more in need of someone to interact with and someone to share his/her feelings with. Healthy lifestyle and exercises should be promoted since young age so that these become habit and part of life and people remain active and healthy in their old age so that they will not become burden on their children and families.
