Socio-demographic and Reproductive Factors Affecting Utilization of Postnatal Services among Women in District Rahim Yar Khan

Abstract

Background: Postnatal care is provided to the mother and newborn immediately after birth up to six weeks. Proper utilization of the postnatal care can substantially reduce the morbidity and mortality of both mother and the child. Current study was conducted to explore the frequency of postnatal services utilization and the factors affecting the postnatal care utilization. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among rural mothers of Union Council 45 P, Tehsil Khan Pur, District Rahim Yar Khan. Total 103 married women who had given birth in last 3 months were included in the study and interviewed regarding their postnatal care utilization and factors affecting utilization. Results: The major proportion of respondents (69.9%) were between 20 to 29 years of age. Only 7.8% mothers and 12.6% fathers were literate. Results of the study showed 80.6% women received postnatal care within 24 hours. Family income, antenatal care received by skilled birth attendant and birth place was associated with postnatal care utilization (p-value<0.05). Conclusion: The current study found that the mothers, who received antenatal care from skilled birth attendant, received postnatal care within 24 hours. Further research in the local context is required.
