Journal Title: Journal of Combat Sports and Martial Arts - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction. It is believed that there are about 200 various techniques in the world which are classified as sports and martial arts practiced professionally (as sports), as well as recreationally and for health purposes by over 100 million people. Due to peculiarity of this physical activity that can be practiced at all ages (from childhood until old age), regardless of sex, social or professional status, it is recommended that martial arts are propagated as an element of life quality improvement and modern-age disease prevention. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate Warsaw inhabitants’ participation in martial arts and combat sports trainings as well to analyze conditions under which these are undertaken.Material and methods. The research involved 16 different professional groups and chosen year groups from among middle high school students and university students. In order to choose the research groups an authorial two-step system of draw was used. The system was assigned to particular professions and students. The research was of a poll nature and the direct (standardized) interview was conducted by trained and supervised pollsters in accordance with a specified pattern which was the same for all the respondents. There were about 240 collected interviews per a pollster and the cases in which a respondent refused to be interviewed came to about 3–5%. Overall, the number of respondents amounted to 6,547 people. The statistical analysis was conducted with use of Statistica 9.0 PL.Results and conclusions. Participation of the representatives of Warsaw professional groups in martial arts and combat sports is scarce. Practicing martial arts is conditioned mainly by age. However, such social and demographic characteristics as sex, marital status, education or profession are also statistically significant. Martial arts, which are a source of balance, harmony and health, richness of movement and opportunities for self-fulfillment, ought to be used as a supplement or an alternative to a therapy of some illnesses or as correction for adolescents.
