Socio-Demographic Profile and Various Depression Scale Scores among Patients with Major Depression in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young adults worldwide. This study was aimed to describe socio-demographic profile of patients with major depression and to assess various depression scores among them. MATERIAL & METHODS: Total 70 subjects were recruited from patients coming to Psychiatry OPD in GMERS Medical college and civil hospital valsad. Subjects were aged 18-80 years who met DSM-IV-TR criteria for current major depressive episode and were free of severe, unstable medical and neurologic disorders .Analysis of data was done by using Epi-info version 7. RESULTS: Out of the total 24 patients who had attempted suicide 12 were male and 12 were female and out of the 46 patients who did not attempt suicide 24 were male patients and 22 were female patients. There was significant difference in the mean score of Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, Beck Depression Inventory and Suicide Ideation Scale among suicide attempters and suicide non-attempters. CONCLUSION: The present study concludes that occupation, higher education, fear of suicide, social and coping beliefs of individuals and society at large act as protective factors against suicide in patients with current Major Depressive Disorder. Severity of depression was significantly higher in suicide attempters.
