SOCIOLECT AS A PROBLEM OF THE LITERARY TRANSLATION

Abstract

This article considers a problem of reflection of sociolect in the literary in English-Ukrainian translation. The concept of sociolect is firstly explained, an analysis of this phenomenon is conducted through the prism of the research of modern domestic and foreign linguists and translators. It is determined that the examples of sociolect can be slang, argot, professional dialect and colloquialisms like cockney in London. Particular attention is also paid to the role of the sociolect in the artistic text that makes it possible to identify certain factors that are relevant to the translation of the pragmatic effect of the Ukrainian language, which is caused by the use of the sociolect in the original text. With the aid of sociolect, the author can develop characters of his work that is why the aim of translator consists in an exact reproduction of such pragmatically effect in the target text. The article considers difficulties during the translation of sociolect and proposes ways to overcome them, given whether the original used in the text of the colloquialisms, slang, argots, or professional dialect. In this regard, various translation techniques and transformations are investigated, namely: compensation of phonetic and grammatical features of the original by Ukrainian vulgarism; the use of redundancy, enhancement particles, which is typical of the Ukrainian colloquialisms; imitation of colloquial Ukrainian, slang, colloquialisms, that is, the search for the corresponding analogue; descriptive translation. On the example of Bernard Shaw’s "Pygmalion" translations it is managed to recognize the appropriateness of using some techniques and the inappropriateness of others. The results of the study made it possible to conclude, on the one hand, that an adequate translation of the sociolect is achieved only by the using the method of selecting an equivalent analogue in the Ukrainian language. On the other hand, the literal translation is not appropriate in the transmission of sociolect in an artistic work, because it does not reflect the pragmatism of the original text.
