Solidarity with students with specific learning disabilities

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7

Abstract

The article focuses on the issues of specific learning disabilities. Its aim is to express solidarity with students grappling with this problem. The article discusses the term special educational needs, which is not always well understood, and describes this diversified group of students. Based on the literature, terminology in the area of specific difficulties in acquiring academic skills is systematized, including the following terms: dyslexia, dysorthographia, pure dysorthographia, difficulties with written expression, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. This terminology is presented with reference to the international medical classifications: the ICD-10 and the DSM-5. Also, the article presents definitions of dyslexia that were developed by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the European Dyslexia Association (EDA). The issues discussed in the article are presented against the changes that have taken place in Poland in the legal basis for psychological and educational assistance and for the assessment of students with specific learning difficulties. The article describes the role the Polish Dyslexia Association performed in this process, the stages of the development of an assistance model for people with specific learning difficulties in Poland, and the campaign for equal opportunities for these students at school. It also reviews the directives and regulations of the Minister of National Education and the announcements of the Central Examination Commission Director issued from 1975 through 2015 concerning specific learning difficulties/disabilities.
