SOME EXAMPLES OF "DELETERIOUS ACTIVITIES” OF AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE CONSULS IN ALBANIA GEOGRAPHY

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 50

Abstract

The Austro-Hungarian Empire was very interested in Albania's geography for the next forty years after the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1878. The main reason for this interest was to prevent the propagation of Russia's influence which followed the Pan Slavism policy in the Balkan geography and the idea to prevent the dominance of Serbia, which acts in the direction of Russia, in Adriatic. Consulates of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the Balkans played a very active role in the identification and implementation of policies that the state followed in the region. The consuls, who had mastered the language of the region that they were assigned to, were in contact with different sections of the society both by means of receptions in the consulate and traveling. Thus, they had communication with Catholic Albanians, of whom they claimed to be the protector as well as Muslim Albanians and played an undeniable role in the development of Albanian nationalism. In this study the harmful attitudes of the Austro-Hungarian empire consuls, who worked in the territory of Albania, to the interests of the Ottoman State, their behaviors that interfered with internal affairs, activities that shook the state’s authority and the reactions of the Ottoman Empire against them and the precautions they took are emphasized.
