Some notes on the life and library of Nicolae Ion Lahovary
Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 2
Abstract
Nicolae Ion Lahovary had a military, later bureaucratic, and finally political career. His public presence was “discrete”, at least compared with the important role of his elder son, Alexandru, one of the leaders of the Romanian “conservative movement”. But the genealogical considerations could not be separated from his intellectual profile. An inventory of the politician` s library, found in the archive of his son, brought significant information on Lahovary’s literary, historical and political preoccupations. The importance of the data contained by the document is given by their relevance to the origins of the Romanian conservatism, but also for the history of the local upper-class reading preferences in the XIXth-century.
