SPERM PARAMETERS AND TESTOSTERONE PROFILE OF SPRAGUE DAWLEY RATS WITH PALA KALYANA GHRITA: A TRADITIONAL FORMULA

Abstract
Pala Kalyana Ghrita (PKG) is a poly herbal traditional medicine used for enhancement of fertility in both partners. However, the scientific evaluation of these natural resources are yet to be explored. So, to add to the existing knowledge of pharmaceutical significance of this formula present work was chosen.18 rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 6 /group). The control group, Group I received only distilled water. Groups II and III administrated PKG once daily containing 900 mg and 1800 mg / kg body weight respectively, for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of the treatment mean body weight of the group II and group III animals was significantly higher than group I animals (231.33 ± 6.80 g) (p = 0.003) Serum testosterone level was significantly elevated in both treated group 1I and group III (2.967 ± 0.67ng/mL), (3.73 ± 2.10 ng/mL) respectively when compared to the group I, control (0.68±0.11ng/mL) (p = 0.001).PKG possesses fertility enhancing effects as evident by increasing the total motile sperm count, testosterone level and decreasing morphological abnormalities in sperm of male Sprague Dawley rats.
