Abstract

This study aims to indicate common philosophical approaches between Herman Melville and Baruch Spinoza. Melville’s novel called ‘’Pierre or the Ambiguities’’ and his short story ‘‘Bartleby the Scrivener’’ which are the most obvious readings to see Melville’s outlook about philosophy, so these are texts which will be focused on. God-Substance comprehension and panteism, common order of nature based on principle of causality and rejection of free-will in this order, all this matters are bottom lines for as Melvile’s fiction as Spinoza’s philosophy. These common lines will be disscussed considering the Spinoza influced on the nineteenth century.
