Staff Leadership Development: Its Implication on Performance of HIV/AIDS Projects in Nakuru Town East Sub-county, Nakuru County, Kenya

Abstract

Community project's success or failure is the outcome of the way project stakeholders are led, since leadership is deliberated as a perilous success factor for any project. Despite the contribution of staff towards performance of community based HIV/AIDS projects, their leadership capacity in project implementation is a major concern on the performance and sustainability of these projects. This paper presents findings on staff leadership development on performance of HIV/AIDS projects in Nakuru Town East sub-county in Nakuru County. Theory of change guided the study to measure the proposed variables. The study employed descriptive research design. The target population were staff managing HIV/AIDs projects in Nakuru Town East Sub-county. Simple random sampling technique was used to sample 200 respondents from the target population. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative approaches in data collection. The study used simple random sampling method, to ensure that all the project staff are given an equal chance of participating in the study. Questionnaires and interview schedules were utilized to get relevant qualitative data from the respondents. The study found that staff training offered on performance of HIV/AIDS projects improve the performance of community based Hiv/Aids projects. For instance, 65.6% of employees in their organization often receive leadership skills training, 67.2% are able to coordinate a project during its implementation, 55.7% responded that each employee is often given an equal chance of leading HIV/AIDS project and 60.4% agreed that project leaders are sorely accountable for the project being implemented. However, majority of the respondents claimed that the kind of trainings they are exposed to it is not adequate and consistent to equip them with current knowledge on the projects they are implementing. The study concluded that it is imperative that staff implementing community based Hiv/Aids projects staff are aware of their capacity needs in order to help implementing agencies refocus their trainings, what they are expected to do and how their performance can be improved. The study recommended that every organization implementing projects should do regular performance appraisals on all employees for effective project performance. Based on the findings of the study, further research should be done on the influence of community leadership on the performance and sustainability of HIV/AIDS projects.
