Strategic competency as a component determinant of the future translator’s professional competence

Abstract

The article presents the analysis of scientists’ research (N. Havrilenko, M. Korovkina, L. Latyshev, O. Popova, O. Porshneva, A. Semenov, A. Khutorskoy, L. Chernovatyi, O. Shevnin, A. Albir, D. Cao, B. Harris and others) on the problem regarding the implementation of the competence-based approach into the training aimed at the future translators. The key concepts of the study ‒ “competence”, “competence” and “strategic competency” ‒ are examined. The (translation) strategic competency is presented by the author as a set of holistic knowledge regarding the implementation mechanisms of strategic tactical tools; skills and abilities to analyze translation factors and, basing on them, to model and then to actualize, the translation activity as well as its format depending on the translation situation through adequate means: tactics and strategies, the sequence of translational actions-operations at the level of specific techniques, the use (non-use) of technical tools, machine translation, editors, and the like. Some specific features of the English translator’s professional competence are revealed in the article. The structure of the competence under study is described. We correlate the strategic competency with the term “over-competence”, which performs a decisive function in terms of determining the vector of translation activities implementation and influences the course and results of this activity. The strategic competency allows identifying translation problems and coordinating translation actions to overcome them. Another controversial issue in the field of translation is the difference between the translation problem and translation difficulties. A more thorough study of these issues is the subject of our further research.
