Structural Characteristics, Antitumor, Antibacterial Properties of Polysaccharides and Essential oil, isolated from Eucalyptus Cultivated in Lebanon

Journal Title: World Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to extract and examine the antibacterial and antitumor activities of a water-soluble polysaccharide and essential oils extracted from Eucalyptus globulus leaves collected from Lebanon. The polysaccharide was analyzed using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and FTIR methods to reveal its structure and tested for antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by microdilution method. The essential oils were obtained and tested in-vitro for anti-proliferative activity against the colorectal cancer cell lines HT29 and HCT116 for 24h, 48h and 72h respectively, by the MTT cell viability assay. The results of this study highlighted the bactericidal activity of the polysaccharide fucoidan against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Moreover, 0.5 μg/mL of essential oils were able to inhibit more than 70 % of both colorectal cancer cells lines, indicating an interesting anti-proliferative activity. This study suggests that the Eucalyptus extracts: oils and polysaccharide could be used as a source of natural anti-proliferative and antibacterial agents and thus could be useful in understanding the relations between traditional and current medicine.
