Journal Title: MedPulse -International Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease that most often affects middle aged females. This study highlights the cytomorphological featuserological findings. Res of HT and helps to define a grading criteria for thyroiditis on FNA smears.. The grading along with cytological features has been correlated with. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study conducted in the Department of Pathology and the Department of Medicine, Safdarjung hospital and VMMC.60 patients who were diagnosed as HT on fine needle aspiration cytology were included in the study. Blood sample of these patients was taken for thyroid profile and for antithyroid peroxidase and antithyroglobulin antibodies. Cytological grading of the cases was done and this grading along with cytological features was correlated with serology. Results and Conclusion: Cytological grading of HT into mild, moderate and severe categories showed significant association with anti TPO antibody levels as well as anti TGantibody levels. Significant correlation was alsonoted between the lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and these two antibodies. Cytological grading of HT on FNA smears helps in assessing the severity of the disease and can predict the thyroid functional status.
