Study of incidence and clinical profile of thyroid lesions at a tertiary care hospital

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Thyroid lesions are fairly common worldwide and commonly encountered in clinical practice. The incidence of thyroid nodules has been on the rise in recent decades, mainly due to the wider use of neck imaging. Aim: To study the incidence and clinical profile of thyroid lesions in patients presented at a tertiary care hospital. Material and Methods: All cases of Anterior neck swelling with history of thyroid lesion or suspicious of thyroid lesion of both sexes were studied. Routine investigations like CBC, Thyroid function tests and other special investigations like FNAC and USG was done. Results: Out of 114 cases 76 (66.6%) cases presented with swelling in neck within 6 months to 1 year followed by 25 cases (22%) in 3-5 months and 13(11.4%) cases presented with duration of less than 3 months. 13 (11.4%) cases were bilateral, 33 (29%) cases were from left side and 68 (59.6%) cases were from right side of the thyroid gland. The most common complaint was swelling in neck seen in all (100%) cases, followed by difficulty in swallowing (8.8%) and pain was observed in only 2 cases (1.8%). Conclusion: The thyroid lesions most commonly affected the age group of 21-40 years with female preponderance seen in 84.2% cases. Goiter is the most common non-neoplastic condition affecting both males and females, follicular adenoma is the commonest benign neoplasm and papillary thyroid carcinoma is the commonest malignant neoplasm.
