Journal Title: Indian Obstetrics & Gynaecology - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the incidence, to enlist aetiological factors and outcomes of medical and surgical management of primary amenorrhoea. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out over a period of 19 months from March 2009 to September 2010 in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad. All the patients with primary amenorrhoea were included and patients having secondary amenorrhoea were excluded. Detailed history, examination and investigations were recorded on a proforma. Results: Total number of outpatients during the study period was 17,222, out of which, 18 cases of primary amenorrhoea were identified. The incidence of primary amenorrhoea was 0.104 %. The common cause was outflow tract abnormalities and among them, 50% of the cases were due to the absence of uterus, cervix and vagina. Karyotyping was normal in 66.66%. Outcome was good in outflow tract obstruction with cryptomenorrhoea. Conclusion: Primary amenorrhoea is an extremely stressful problem for a young girl and her parents. Most cases need psychological support. With appropriate medical and surgical managements we can establish sexual, menstrual functions and occasionally even reproductive functions.
