Study of the effect of Selol and sodium selenite on HeLa cells in vitro

Abstract
The paper presents results of studies on the antiproliferative effect of Selol 5% on HeLa tumour cells, as compared to sodium selenite. Based on the results of the MTT test, determination of total protein, apoptosis induction and penetration of selenium into the cells, an incubation time-dependent cytotoxic activity of Selol was established (IC50 ~ 80 μM Se, 48 h), and compared to the strong cytotoxic activity of sodium selenite (IC50 ~ 5,9 μM Se, 24 h). Slow penetration of selenium from Selol into the tumour cell, responsible for the prolonged time of its activity, enables potential application of Selol in antitumour therapy.
