Study on farmers’ willingness to adopt straw returning based on the theory of planned behavior

Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2022, Vol 56, Issue 1

Abstract

[Objective] Straw returning can help improve the quality of cultivated land, but the willingness of farmers to adopt it is not strong. [Method] Based on the theory of planned behavior, this study set up a structural equation model to empirically analyze the factors influencing farmers’ willingness to adopt straw returning into the field with 385 field data. [Results] 1) Farmers’ subjective norm, behavior attitude and perceptual behavior control positively affect their willingness to adopt straw returning; 2) Farmers’ subjective norm is most affected by government regulation, which is the most important factor to affect their willingness of straw returning; 3) Compared with the economic benefits of straw returning, the farmers more recongnized the ecological benefits of straw returning; 4) The degree of difficulty level of straw returning technology acquisition had the greatest influence on perceptual behavior, while the agricultural green production subsidy funds play a smaller role of incentive due to the low amount and difficulty of obtaining. [Conclusion] To improve the willingness of straw returning, we should carry out the policy of straw burning supervision by many means, publicize and educate in many ways and build the demonstration area of straw returning in order to enhance the recognition of economic benefits of straw returning, it is necessary to improve the accessibility of technical services, and further increase the government subsidy to give play to the incentive effect of government subsidies.
