STUDY ON HAEMATOLOGICAL PROFILE AMONG HIV POSITIVE PATIENTS

Abstract
BACKGROUND HIV infection is rapidly spreading and has established itself throughout the world. Abnormalities in haematological profile including anaemia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia and pancytopenia are common findings among ‘HIV positive’ patients. The objective of the study is to study haematological profile among the ‘HIV positive’. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who were ‘HIV positive’ and were admitted during the period of one year in a tertiary care teaching hospital were included in the study. Blood samples were collected, and the haematological profile was analysed. HIV status was confirmed by ELISA method. RESULTS 75% of the patients in our study group were in the age group of 26-45 years. Our study sample comprised of 68% male and 32% female patients. Fever was the most common symptom (60% of the patients), followed by loss of weight (among 50% of the patients). Most common haematological finding is anaemia, which was observed in 60% of the patients. Normocytic normochromic blood picture was seen in 50% of the patients. Leucopenia was seen in 25% cases and thrombocytopenia in 20% of cases. Haemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes were significantly reduced according to severity criteria (p < 0.05). Other findings include oral candidiasis (20%), generalized lymphadenopathy (20%) and skin lesions (10%) among the study sample. CONCLUSION Abnormality in the haematological profile was common among ‘HIV positive’ patients. Haemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes were significantly reduced according to the severity criteria.
