Subjective and objective evaluation of the results of cervical vertigo kinesitherapy

Journal Title: Otolaryngologia Polska - Year 2011, Vol 65, Issue 3

Abstract

SUMMARY Introduction: The study aimed at the subjective and objective evaluation of the results of cervical vertigo kinesitherapy. Material and methods: The tests were conducted on 100 random patients, including 65 women aged 20-76 and 35 men aged 20-73, under kinesi-therapy. The patients were divided into 2 groups: I — 50 cervical vertigo patients, II — healthy subjects, no vertigo. With consideration to the previous history and possible contraindications, every patient was subject to an in-dividually selected cycle of exercises including: postisometric relaxation of the perivertebral cervical muscles, isometric exercises of the neck muscles, relaxation exercises, habituation exercises, posture exercises, exercises in spatial awareness through 2 months (three times per day). The objective evalu-ation of the effectiveness of the applied therapy was performed by means of videonystagmography and cervical spine mobility measurements before and after 2 weeks, one month and two months. The subjective evaluation of the therapy results was based on the patient's opinion before and after the therapeutic cycle, according to Silvoniemi's criteria. Results: Due to kinesitherapy the symptoms intensification in patients from group I with Iesions in videonystagmography was decreasing in consecu-tive periods: after 2 weeks, one month and two months. These findings are presented in Table VI. However, after 2 months the Iesions were persistent in videonystagmography: calibration in 16 cases (32%), pendulum test 0.3 Hz in 25 cases (50.0%), pendulum test 0.45 Hz in 31 cases (62.0%), pendulum test 0.6 Hz in 38 cases (76.0%) and spontaneous nystagmus in one case (2.0%). Conclusions: in the conducted tests, both objective (videonystagmography) and subjective (Silvoniemi' criteria) the major part of the patients (82.3%) revealed a complete abatement or a significant decrease in the cervical vertigo intensification due to kinesitherapy
