Supernumerary premolar teeth – clinical and radiological pattern and treatment options
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 12
Abstract
Aim of the study: To evaluate the occlusion and associated dental abnormalities in patients with supernumerary premolars, and to discuss treatment options.Material and methods: Clinical examination and analysis of panoramic radiographs were carried out for eight patients with supernumerary premolars. Therapeutic procedures were discussed. Results: A total of twenty supernumerary premolars were found in the eight patients examined. All the teeth in question had more mature stages of development than adjacent premolars. The associated malocclusions included anterior crossbite, open bite, crowding, distal occlusion, mesial occlusion. Conclusion: It seems that discovering the mechanism of dental lamina persistence could be a turning point in the treatment of patients with missing teeth. Familial and individual occurrence of hyperdontia creates the need for long-term follow-up of the affected patients and their relatives.
