Survey of hysterectomy and its indications in Ahvaz Imam Khomeini Medical Hospital in 2009-2011 years

Abstract
Introduction: Hysterectomy is the most common surgery in non-pregnant women. Review of hysterectomy indications can provide new viewpoints in treatment of the patients for gynecologists. This study performed to survey indications and methods of hysterectomy in Imam Khomeini educational hospital in Ahvaz. Methods: This descriptive-analystical and cross sectional study was performed from March 2009 to March 2011in Imam Khomeini educational hospital. The data from 260 patients who undergo hysterectomy during these two years registered in a pre-prepared questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software. Results: According to the results, the cases of hysterectomy has decreased by 1.6% from 2009 to 2011. The most common indication of hysterectomy was leiomyoma 32.3% and other indications from higher to lower prevalence were abnormal uterine bleeding 31.53%, malignancy of uterus and ovaries 14.61%, uterine prolapse 8.84%, and obstetric emergencies 5.38%. Abdominal hysterectomy had been performed in 91.15% and vaginal hysterectomy had been performed in 8.85% of cases. Conclusion: The most common indication for hysterectomy in Imam Khomeini educational hospital in Ahvaz is leiomyoma and then abnormal uterine bleeding and the most commonly used method is abdominal hysterectomy.
