СУРЖИК У МОВЛЕННІ ПЕРСОНАЖІВ СУЧАСНОЇ УКРАЇНСЬКОЇ ДРАМИ

Journal Title: "Український смисл" - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The article analyzes surzhyk in speech of characters of modern Ukrainian plays which are emphasized by postmodern attention to «small people», «no-heroes». Absence of a hero validates actualization of experiments with language form. In this case analysis of surzhyk as a hybrid language form, which is actively used by modern playwrights in characters’ speeches, is of some interest. Surzhyk refers to Ukrainian-Russian language hybrid which is a consequence of artificial combination of the Ukrainian and Russian languages and which ruins the norms of Ukrainian standard language. Analyzed plays prove the fact that Ukrainian playwrights believe surzhyk has become a conventional phenomenon which occasionally receives the status of «the third language» along with Ukrainian and Russian. In terms of region surzhyk-speaking characters of modern plays represent different regions of Ukraine (the Crimea, Donetsk, Kyiv, L’viv). Depending on author’s artistically aesthetic focus surzhyk-speaking characters can be divided into four types: 1) sharply negative characters with a criminal twist; 2) characters with low level of education and a myopic view of the world; 3) characters who possess adequate level of intellectual development but use surzhyk in order not to stand out; 4) characters who use hyperbolized surzhyk as means of ridiculing low anti-culture. It is proved that genre peculiarities of a play make it impossible to consider plays with surzhyk elements to be pathogenic text. Modern playwrights sometimes bring up the concern of language purity directly, which becomes the momentum in development of play’s plot. The prospects of further research can be seen in investigating the processes of language reformation which are verbalized in dialogues of characters of modern Ukrainian plays.
