Sustainable Tourism Practices Based on Governance by MSMEs in Jardín (Colombia) and Tepotzotlán (Mexico) From 2019 to 2021

Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 19

Abstract

Due to a global trend towards sustainability, tourism companies—especially Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs)—should preserve ecosystems and economically benefit stakeholders. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the sustainable tourism practices of MSMEs located in two Latin American municipalities: Jardín in Colombia and Tepotzotlán in Mexico. By means of a research methodology based on the scientific method, field data were collected and statistically analyzed to obtain information on the tourism services that both municipalities currently provide and their alignment with sustainability principles. The analysis showed how much effort these municipalities have put into implementing sustainable tourism practices, as well as the actions that should be undertaken to strengthen their services, protect the environment, and achieve economic growth. Also, considering their different perspectives, the results revealed how each municipality interprets and orients sustainable tourism based on their own regulations and quality, innovation, and sustainability practices. Finally, the findings highlight the strengths and areas of opportunity that should be further promoted and publicized in both municipalities to preserve their cultural heritage for current and future generations.
