SYRIA, AN AGONIZING COUNTRY. THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND ENVIRNOMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE CONFLICT

Journal Title: Revista Romana de Geografie Politica - Year 2015, Vol 17, Issue 1

Abstract

The Syrian conflict that broke out in March 2011 seems to not end anytime soon. For various reasons, the efforts of the international community to stop the civil war have not been successful. The Assad regime, still supported by Russia and Iran, even if has lost more and more ground against opposition forces, including the access to oil resources, is not willing to cede power. The state of insecurity and dissatisfaction in the region has increased the influence of radical Islamic groups, such as the Islamic State. In all this time, the socio-economic situation and the environment have deteriorated continously. Nearly half of the population is displaced within or outside the country, living in poverty, many settlements are in ruins, and public services are not functional.
