Taurodontism – literature review and case reports
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2010, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
The aim of this study was to systematize information on clinical forms, severity, frequency and methods of diagnosis of taurodontism on the basis of literature and presentation of patients with this anomaly. Materials and methods. Bases PubMed, Medline and other English-language sources between years 1975 – 2010 were searched, using the keyword taurodontism and thirtyeight papers were selected. In addition, the results of measurements of taurodontic teeth were reported and assessment of occlusion of three patients of the Academic Centre for Dentistry and Specialist Medicine with diagnosed taurodontism was conducted. Measurements of taurodontic teeth were performed on panoramic radiographs using the method Tulensalo et al. Results. The literature shows that taurodontism can occur as an isolated trait or may be associated with congenital anomalies. The incidence of taurodontism is the smallest among the Europeans and the highest among the black African population. This anomaly is diagnosed mainly on the radiograms of the dentition. The authors distinguish three degrees of severity: hypotaurodontism, mesotaurodontism and hypertaurodontism. In presented study on three patients with this abnormality eighteen taurodontic permanent teeth (including thirteen hypotaurodontic and five mesotaurodontic), and seven hypotaurodontic decidous teeth were found. Conclusion. Based on literature and studied cases, it was found that taurodontism mostly concerns first permanent molars. It is characterized by symmetrical occurrence. Recognition of taurodontism can be a diagnostic criterion for the identification of other congenital defects. (Orthod. Forum 2010; 6: 37 - 46). Received: 5.05.2010 Accepted: 9.06.2010
