TEMPORAL MYTHOLOGEMS IN HALYNA PAHUTIAK’S LITERARY PROSE

Abstract

The principal objective of the paper is to analyze the temporal dimension of H. Pahutiak’s mythopoetics. It focuses on the recur-ring images and motifs with immanent temporality, and also on the interpretation of the mythologems with a peripheral temporal semantic component. Literary confrontation of linear time and cyclical time is considered as one of the characteristic features of neomythological works. The study examines the specifics of transforming the image of a clock and accentuates its gothic markers in the author’s prose. It emphasizes the relationship between this image and the transition rituals associated with death. The paper details a temporal aspect of the mythologem of a mirror. It characterizes the peculiarities of the category of time in the oneiric inter-text. The paper also investigates the spatial and temporal symbolism of the image of the Aleph, reminiscently connected with J. Borges’s story of the same name. It analyzes the semantics of the image of the setting sun related to the category of eternity. The paper considers the motif of the eternal return as a literary projection of the cyclical model of time. The conclusion can be drawn that the temporal aspect in H. Pahutiak’s neomyth is mainly visualized through the gothically marked images of a clock, a mirror and the setting sun. The results of this paper will contribute to future research on similar topics.
