TESTING OF AN EFFECT OF AUTOMOTIVE AND INDUSTRIAL GEAR OILS ON GEAR MICROPITTING

Abstract
The aim of the work was to assess the influence of the properties of manual transmission fluids (also called automotive gear oils) on the resistance to micropitting of gears. The FZG GT-C/8,3/90 micropitting test method was performed using a T-12U gear test rig. Three mineral, automotive gear oils of different performance levels were tested – API GL-3, GL-4 and GL-5 oils, as well as a synthetic (PAO) GL-5 oil. For reference, two industrial gear oils were also tested, and one of them was biodegradable oil. The results show that there is no influence of API GL performance levels of automotive gear oils on micropitting. The biodegradable industrial gear oil gives a high resistance to micropitting like the best automotive gear oils. There is no correlation between friction, EP properties, and fatigue (pitting) life and the resistance to micropitting. However, concerning oil viscosity and lubricating film thickness, it exerts a beneficial influence on the resistance to micropitting. The research on micropitting will be continued.
