Testing of taste - a review
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2010, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
The relevance of the sense of taste, smell and sight for cognitive processes of man has been appreciated since ancient times. In clinical practice, patients inquire about the effects of orthodontic appliances on everyday activities. The literature data regarding the impact of such appliances on the sense of taste are sparse. The aim of the present study was to present methods for assessing the sense of taste. Sensory analyses are based on gustometry. The techniques applied may be divided into subjective methods based on individual assessment of patients and objective ones, in which gustatory evoked potentials are recorded during electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography. Since the patients` demands are becoming increasingly high, orthodontists should have suitable knowledge about the methods of taste sensitivity testing in case of any claims or accusations.
