The analysis of post-traumatic teeth condition in children in the year 2004.

Abstract

AIM: The aim of the study was the analysis of posttraumaticteeth condition in patients by the age of 18 yearson the basis of medical histories of patients seen in the year2004. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 260 post-traumaticteeth: 244 in permanent and 16 in deciduous dentitionwere analyzed in 136 patients’ records. The analysis concerned:patient’s sex, age, place of living, cause of injury,Ellis’ classification, types of affected tooth, time periodbetween the accident and dental examination, treatmentmethod and possible complications. RESULTS: It wasfound that among patients with mechanical injuries boyswere in the majority: 97 patients - 71.3%. The highestnumber of patients was younger school age: 76 patients -55.9%. The majority of patients live in big cities: 65 patients- 47.8%. Injuries classified as class II according toEllis occurred most often: 122 teeth - 46.9%. Permanentincisors as well as deciduous ones were the most frequentlyinjured teeth: 231 permanent teeth - 94.7% and 12 deciduousteeth - 75.0%. The majority of patients came to a dentalclinic between 48 hours to one week after the accident: 47patients - 34.5%. In total 206 injured teeth - 79.2% weretreated without any complications. The most common complicationwas pulp necrosis: 45 teeth - 17.3%. CONCLUSIONS:A longer delay in seeking treatment after injuryresulted in more serious complications. (Orthod. Forum2005; 1:73-80)
