THE ANALYSIS OF TRIBOLOGICAL WEAR OF POLYTHENE UHMW PE APPLIED IN BIOTRIBOLOGICAL SYSTEMS

Abstract

This analysis concerns the interaction of a Co-Cr-Mo alloy head with and without a TiN coating and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE) acetabular cup. The TiN coatings were deposited on the Co-Cr-Mo alloy substrate using the PVD technology. The morphology and structure of Co-Cr-Mo alloy, TiN coating and UHMW PE were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The surfaces topography were made with atomic force microscopy – AFM. The tribological tests were performed in accordance with ASTM 732-82 in a T-17 tribotester for a sliding-reciprocating motion. The friction pair was analyzed in the pin-on-plate type wear tests. The results indicated that the mechanisms of wear of the endoprosthesis elements were dependent mainly on the material used.<br/><br/>
