The antimicrobial action analysis of coronary temporary sealing materials used in<br /> endodontics

Journal Title: RSBO - Year 2006, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of two temporary sealing materials (Vitro Fill and Vitro Molar) through a mixed culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosas and Enterococcus faecalis, as well as towards each of the bacterium isolatedly. The experimental suspensions were inoculated on Mueller-Hinton plates, and four tested materials, in tablets were placed (two of Vitro Fill and two of Vitro Molar) on each. Two plates representing each culture in test containing Mueller-Hinton were inoculated, serving as a positive control and two other plates were not inoculated and had the presence of four tablets, serving as a negative control. The plates were then incubated for 48 hours at 37ºC. Presence or absence of halo inhibition surrounding the tablets that were evaluated. The results showed inhibition halos surrounding Vitro Molar tablets for Pseudomonas aeruginosas culture (0.7 to 1.0 centimeters) and the other tested tablets showed no inhibition halos. The coronary provisory Vitro Molar sealer was the only one that presented antimicrobial activity, being this in relation to the pure culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. No material exerted antimicrobial activity in relation to the pure culture of Enterococcus faecalis and the mixed culture in test.
