THE ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF HUMULUS LUPULUS L. DEPENDING ON STORAGE CONDITIONS
Journal Title: Analele Stiintifice ale Universitatii Alexandru Ioan Cuza din Iasi, Serie noua, Sectiunea II a. Biologie vegetala - Year 2016, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
Due to intensive use of dosage and prescriptions of antibiotics, a wide range of microorganisms acquired resistance to existing products. There is an expansion of interest in screening of new sources containing potential antimicrobial properties. Natural products derived from plants are a potential such source of biologically active compounds. Because there are strict international and national legal regulations regarding the production and use of herbal products, the evaluation of their stability in different storage conditions is a requirement that must be accomplished. This study presents a comparison of the antimicrobial activity of the Humulus lupulus (hops) ethanolic extract, depending on the type of packaging and under different storage conditions, over a selected period of time. The antimicrobial activity evaluation was tested by agar diffusion method on Mueller Hinton medium, with the use of the following standard strains: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. The results obtained during the experiments performed for 12 months, showed that the prolonged storage in various conditions of temperature and package triggered differentiate influence of the antimicrobial activity of the plant extract.
