The Assembling of the Strategic Models for the Profitability of Urmia Lake

Abstract
Urmia lake is a wide (an area of 5,000 km2) and high salinity lake located in northwest of Iran, between West and East Azerbaijan provinces. This lake is located at the lowest point of the closed basin, with an approximate area of 52,000 km2 that parts of it situated in Kurdistan province. Urmia Lake is a national park and one of the largest Ramsar sites in Iran which has been introduced as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Many freshwater and brackish satellite wetlands located around it, many of them have a universal significance due to biodiversity. Urmia Lake and its satellite wetlands have been selected as one of the sample sites of Iran wetlands conservation projects in partnership with United Nation Development Program (UNDP/GEF). The aim of the present project is to reduce the major threats of these protected wetlands through the establishment of ecosystem management, with a comprehensive management program. During the past decades, due to a severe reduction in water levels and increasing salinity, Urmia Lake has faced with a critical conditions .Many satellite wetlands around the lake damaged from implementation of infrastructure projects, land use changes, pollution and reduced water inflows. These problems, threatened biodiversity of this wetland which has international importance and many advantages to local communities.
