THE BEGINNINGS OF TREATMENT WITH CHLORPROMAZINE IN POLISH PSYCHIATRY

Abstract

The article outlines the history of chlorpromazine and the atmosphere of its introduction in Poland in the fifties of the twentieth century. Henryk Zajaczkowski (1898-1963) was the first doctor who treated patients with chlorpromazine in Poland (1954). Chlorpromazine was used in a few of psychiatric institutions in Poland at the end of 1954. The Extraordinary Scientific Meeting of the Polish Association of Neurologists, Neurosurgeons and Psychiatrists (Gdansk - Bydgoszcz Branch) held place in Swiecie on 07/24/1955. During its deliberations settlement with the period of Stalinism in Polish psychiatry a year before the "official thaw" launched in Poznan in 1956 began and early experience with the use of chlorpromazine in psychiatry was discussed. In the years 1955 - 1956 many scientific psychiatric meetings were related to the treatment with chlorpromazine. The first Polish multicenter evaluation of the results of treatment of mental illness by chlorpromazine in the years 1954-1955 was published in 1958. It stated that chlorpromazine was more effective than previously used methods (insulin, electroshock).
