The causes of latent victimization of population: some domestic and foreign research

Abstract
In the article, the causes of latent victimization of population on the basis of empirical research that was conducted in the United States and Ukraine was considered. The main reasons of victimization not reported to the police in United States are: police would not or could not help (31 %), not important enough to victim to report (27 %), dealt with in another way/personal matter (20 %), fear of reprisal or getting offender in trouble (5 %) and some other reasons (e.g. reluctance to disclose information about his private life, advised not to report to police, too inconvenient to take the time, the lack of certainty about the report and other). Causes of latent victimization of population in Ukraine are: police would not or could not help (22,5 %), small size of damage caused to crime (22,1 %), reluctance to disclose information about his private life (9,1 %), no serious health consequences (8.4 %), reluctance to participate in the investigation of the crime (7,5 %) and etc. The conclusion about the similarity of the causes of latent victimization in these countries was made.
