The challenge of the “new capitalism” for “market capitalism” in developed countries

Journal Title: KONIŃSKIE STUDIA SPOŁECZNO-EKONOMICZNE - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

The article discusses the transformation from “market capitalism” to the new (“pro-business”) capitalism. Market capitalism is the organization of economic activities through private entrepreneurship in free competitive markets. The “new capitalism” is characterized by re-regulation to the benefit of the “pro-business” sector. This article largely utilizes Robert Reich’s criteria and analysis of the new capitalism to characterize market capitalism in order to provide acom-parison between these two types of capitalism. In addition to Robert Reich’s analysis, the paper also uses the work of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, JohnMaynard Keynes and Thomas Piketty.
