THE CHRISTIAN SCRIPTURES AND THE RISE OF GLOBAL CHRISTIANITY
Journal Title: Acta Missiologica - Year 2018, Vol 12, Issue 1
Abstract
Over the past 100 years Christianity has experienced a remarkable demographic shift from North to South. The Global North (defi ned as Europe and North America) contained over 80% of all Christians in 1910, falling to under 40% by 2010. This has resulted in a cultural shift from individualistic European cultures to group-oriented cultures of the Global South. Nonetheless, much of the theological content of global Christianity is produced and distributed by the Global North in the Global South. In addition, Christianity has experienced increased fragmentation, with 45,000 denominations worldwide. Christian resources are not evenly divided, with the minority North holding 68% of all Christian income. At the same time, Bible translation over the past 100 years has placed the scriptures into the hands of dozens of new peoples. Scriptural refl ections from these new languages are likely to add to the Christian impetus for global mission, addressing signifi cant shortfalls, especially between Christians and adherents of other world religions. The article concludes with recommendations for the future.
