The community concept in carabid studies. A short review.
Journal Title: Baltic Journal of Coleopterology - Year 2012, Vol 12, Issue 1
Abstract
On the basis of a review of the first thirteen European Carabidologists Meetings we have analyzed how the community concept has been used in carabid studies. Four main approaches emerged from the analysis, i.e. the “community approach” (species by sites table), when the study is based on a “classical” species-by-sites table; the “rationale background” approach, when the community is treated more as an ecological functional unit than a simple statistical aggregate of populations, for interpreting the results of the study; the “implicit condition” approach, when the community is taken for granted, i.e. it is not demonstrated, and it is meant as a statistical community; and an approach based on criticism, i.e. new ways of treating data on carabid communities.
