The compressibility of natural and reconstituted marine clays
Journal Title: Geotechnical Research - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
There is mounting evidence in favour of replacing the e against log10(s0v) diagram, conventionally used to represent soil compressibility in an oedometer, with a log(v) against log(s0v) diagram, which significantly improves the linearity of virgin loading and unloading paths. This paper presents a simple, new formulation of the ‘intrinsic’ compression and ‘sedimentation’ compression lines for a range of insensitive, sedimentary marine clays presented in Burland’s 1990 Rankine Lecture by using a log(v) against log(s0v) interpretation of the data.

The bearing capacity of footings on sand with a weak layer
Minor details of the ground, such as thin weak layers, shear bands and slickensided surfaces, can substantially affect the behaviour of soil–footing and other geotechnical systems, despite their seeming insignificance. I...
Seismic analysis of pile in liquefiable soil and plastic hinge
Liquefaction is one of the leading seismic actions that cause extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure during earthquakes. In many historic cases, plastic hinge formations in piles were observed at inexplicable l...
Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer
Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1g). The results, reported in a companion paper, point...
LRFD guides for driven piles considering pile set-up phenomenon
By using an electronic database consisting of previously tested pile data and ten completed full-scale pile tests in Iowa, USA, load and resistance factor design (LRFD) resistance factors considering various construction...
Impact of highly weathered geology on pipejacking forces
For the Kuching Wastewater Management System Phase 1 project in Kuching, Malaysia, 7·7 km of trunk sewer lines were constructed in the highly fractured, highly weathered Tuang Formation using a pipe-jacking method. The p...
