THE CONTENT OF COPPER AND NICKEL IN SCOTS PINE NEEDLES AND SOILS OF SŁUPSK URBAN AREA

Journal Title: Baltic Coastal Zone - Year 2014, Vol 18, Issue

Abstract

The aim of the study was an assessment of Słupsk urban environmental contamination with copper and nickel based on concentrations of these metals in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles and associated soils. The contents of Cu and Ni were analyzed in 1- and 2-year-old needles and in 0-20 cm and 40-60 cm layers of soils. Plant and soil samples were collected in 2010 form 25 stands of different use-type: residential areas, city parks, vicinity of busy streets, industrial areas, vicinity of municipal landfill and sewage-treatment plant. The content of Cu and Ni was analyzed applying the atomic absorption spectrometry technique. We observed spatial variability in the concent of Cu and Ni both in the soils and in pine needles. Higher concentrations of these metals were noticed in 2-year needles, as compared to the 1-year old. A slightly higher variability, depending on the age of needles, urban, industrial and traffic activity showed Ni (14-15%), as compared to Cu (11-14%). A lack of significant correlations between the contents of Cu and Ni in the soils and pine needles suggests a limited bioavailability of these elements in soils and their uptake from atmosphere. Their low availability can be a result of high soil pH due to by anthropogenic alkalization.
