The continuing challenge of cutaneous mucormycosis – A report of two cases
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF MEDICAL COLLEGE CHANDIGARH - Year 2016, Vol 6, Issue 1
Abstract
Background : Necrotizing fasciitis is a well-recognized bacterial infection which requires a high level of surgical care and dedicated wound management to ensure a good outcome. However, on occasion, such infections may arise secondary to infections by fungi of the order Mucorales – such infections are called zygomycosis or mucormycosis, and have a high morbidity and mortality, especially since they remain undiagnosed, and consequently, mistreated. Methods :Two cases of necrotising soft tissue infections due to mucormycosis are reported and their management is discussed. Results :Of the two cases presented, the first could not be saved despite best efforts - possibly, a long delay in the diagnosis contributed to the mortality. The patient who survived remains well. Conclusions: Awareness of the fact that fungi can also be the cause of necrotizing infections especially in patients who do not respond to conventional treatment should alert the clinician to the possibility of an underlying fungal etiology
