THE DEBAUCHED WOMAN AS A DARK OBJECT OF A SADIST

Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

This study examines the inner world of “Melek,” the main character of Pınar Kür’s novel entitled Asılacak Kadın. In order to understand Melek as a fallen woman, the author resorts to Erich Fromm’s concepts of Sadism, Masochism and Sadomasochism. She also touches upon the Jacques Lacan’s approach of “There is no such thing as a sexual intercourse.” Melek is a character who cannot realize her presence. Hüsrev realizes his sexual perversion on Melek who is poor, alone and ignorant. He exposes Melek to many sadistic attitudes and behaviors such as verbal and physical violence, humiliation and forcing her to sexual affairs with men. There is a Sadomasochistic relationship between apparently married Melek and Husrev, not a sexual intercourse. Hüsrev leads Melek to feel herself like a slut while he is enjoying a hegemonic power exercised on Melek’s body through other men. Melek cannot even show the courage to take the initial step towards self-liberation. She prefers to surrender. She acts in a way that makes her weak and powerless to control the things around her. She clearly lacks the ability to experience the feeling of “I exist.” At the end, she is sentenced to death.
