THE DEGREE OF DISABILITY AND THE LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND CO-ORDINATION ABILITIES OF SITTING VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 6

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to establish the relation between the degree of disability and the level of physical fitness and co-ordination abilities of Polish league sitting volleyball players.Material and methods. The study covered 49 players in two classes of disability (medium and high). Moreover, 11 healthy players qualified to play sitting volleyball were tested. The tests were carried out on two dates – before the start of the season and before the final tournament. For the assessment of the co-ordination abilities computer tests developed by Klocek, Spieszny and Szczepanik were used. Physical fitness was assessed using the following tests: flexed arm hang test, sit-ups in 30 s, hand grip strength test, trunk lift, medicine ball throw, endurance and speed test. Results. Statistically significant differences were found between individual groups of players in the majority of physical fitness tests and in one test of co-ordination abilities both on the first and second date of tests. On the second date of tests a statistically significant higher level of physical fitness was noted. The level of co-ordination abilities did not change significantly.Conclusions. Higher values were obtained in physical fitness and co-ordination abilities tests in the subjects with a medium degree of disability, compared to the significantly disabled players and able-bodied subjects seem to indicate that players with a medium degree of disability are best predisposed to play sitting volleyball.
